"If diversity issues within the milieu of black producers, writers, and actors affect more than several dozen black people in tv and film I'd be shocked. The kind of diversity reflected in “The Black Characters I Wish I Saw More Of” is a function of different kinds of privilege and therefore doesn't go "all the way down" to regular black people whose lives look more like mine than they look like Donald Glover's or Ava Duvernay's."
"The death of the star vehicle meant the death of the original blockbuster or at least a blockbuster where the IP wasn’t the primary selling point. Societal changes and tech advancements ultimately destroy the knowledge our species once knew as wisdom—replacing it with acumen, expertise, skill, “hot takes,” and trend spotting.
The Negro whisper benefits from convincing black people and reassuring white people that "the system" is running exactly as it should. That exceptional blacks did it on their own while poor and struggling blacks are where they are because of bad choices. Therefore, politics becomes essentially personal and entrepreneurial, the means by which we change individual behavior and thought to fit the logic of the marketplace. It’s not about changing how society is organized and distributes public goods.
People who can't get that periods can be used in different ways and contexts are as annoying as young people who say “I don't know what that is” when a person or event outside their immediate experience is mentioned, as if that kind of ignorance could (and should) actually be a virtue.
